From South Pacific: “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught”

Prime the pump for this weekend’s sermon on Romans 5:6-15 by reading the text.

Here’s another pump primer.

Oscar Hammerstein II introduces his lyrics, “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught.” Richard Rogers, the composer of the melody, plays as a stage actor sings the song. Hammerstein, the brilliant teller of stories, sets forth the major theme of the musical South Pacific with this song.

Rogers said, some years after Hammerstein’s death, that the music wrote itself when a composer began with lyrics from Hammerstein’s pen.
