IMPORTANT! SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING ON JANUARY 22 @ 1 PM

SPECIAL CONGREGATION MEETING
SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2023 @ 1 P.M.
ST. MATTHEW’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH
WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA
MCSWAIN ACTIVITY CENTER

There will be no lunch prior to the Special Congregation Meeting. You may wish to bring a sack lunch or a snack to hold you over until a late lunch. We encourage all voting members to be present! Please check-in early, so that all voting members will be in place at 1 p.m. Voting will be by secret ballot.

In compliance with our ELCA congregational constitution, Sunday, January 15, was the last opportunity for a confirmed adult member to qualify as a voting member for this special meeting by making a contribution of record defined by the church council as either to the General Fund, Stewardship Alternative Fund, or the Building Fund and by recording that you have communed this weekend. Written verification of both are necessary. According to our constitution, this minimal requirement must be met either in the current or previous year. The next opportunity to join St. Matthew’s or to be restored to membership after having previously been notified of removal from the membership rolls will be on February 18-19, 2023. If you are not certain of your voting status, you may email Joan at finance@stmatthewsch.org.

Because 94 voting members petitioned in June to begin again the disaffiliation process outlined in our constitution, St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church Council has called a special congregational meeting for 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2023, to vote on whether to disaffiliate from the ELCA and, if that vote passes by 2/3 vote of all voting members present, then St. Matthew’s will vote on a motion to affiliate with the AALC. The vote to disaffiliate from the ELCA will be a yes or no vote and requires a 2/3 vote of voting members present to pass. The vote to affiliate with the AALC will be a yes or note vote and requires a simple majority to pass. There are no other options that will be considered.
