The Feast of Pentecost
May 19-20, 2018
We welcome you in the Crucified and Risen Jesus’ name to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost with us. Pastor Sam Zumwalt, STS, preaches the sermon: “For Our Salvation: Guiding Us to Truth” (John 16:5-15). The Holy Eucharist is celebrated at 6 p.m. on Saturday and at 8:30 & 11 a.m. on Sunday. Evening Prayer is sung every Monday at 6:30 p.m. following a conversational Bible study in the nave at 6 p.m. The Rite of Confirmation will be celebrated at 11 a.m. A reception in the confirmands’ honor will be at 9:45 a.m. in the Commons.
From the console of our 25-rank Austin pipe organ with trompette-en-chamade, Bill Glisson leads the congregation in singing joyous hymns on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.: “O Day, Full of Grace” (Entrance); “Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest” (Hymn of the Day); “Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling” (Saturday Recessional); and “Thy Strong Word” (Sunday Recessional). Distribution Hymns (Sunday) include: “Come Down, O Love Divine”; “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart”; and “Holy Spirit, Truth Divine.” The Adult Choir sings “Breath of God” (offering anthem by Curry). Teresa Hall chants the ancient hymn “Veni, Creator Spiritus” in place of the 11 a.m. psalmody. The Adult Choir leads the Taize chant, “Veni, Sancte Spiritus.”
The Joyful Noise Ensemble leads the Chicago Folk Service Eucharist at 8:30 a.m. Joyous hymns and spiritual songs include: “Spirit Song” (entrance); “Breathe on Me, Breath of God” (sermon); “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart” (offering); and “One Bread, One Body” (closing).
